The University of Twente is a middle-sized University of Technology with approximately 6000 students and 2500 staff. The Faculty of Educational Science and Technology has a unique position in the Netherlands in that it combines educational and technology sciences.

The department studies the ways of presentation- and interaction with media, in combination with instructional methods, for knowledge transfer, education, schooling and training (including their usage in distance education and extracurricular situations).

 

Universidade Aberta (the Portuguese Open University) is the national institution of higher education dedicated to distance teaching. Its headquarters are in Lisbon and it has delegations in Porto and in Coimbra, as well as study centres in almost every district of the country.

A part of the Portuguese state-owned university system, it has had a predominant role in teacher training and in undergraduate programmes, four year university degrees, master and doctoral degrees in Humanities, Sciences and Technologies. The course Multmedia Educational Communication is a masters programme that deals with the usage and application of technology for distance education.
